The estimate of oil leaking into the Gulf of Mexico every day has increased multiple times now. Do you think BP is purposely underestimating the amount of oil being leaked into the Ocean as some have suggested?

  1. Do ZI think BP has purposely underestimated the gallons spilling into the gulf? Does Charlie Daniels play a mean fiddle?

  2. of course bp is trying to to make it seem like less, they don't want everyone to one realize just how big a mess they,ve created, businesses do this all the time, they screw up and then try to down play the errors they,ve made.

  3. Perhaps they are. However, is there a gauge at the source reading how much oil is spilling out? How are they able to say with absolute certainty how much oil is actually flowing. I contend that they are not able to give an accurate account and therefor are changing from day to day due to the rate at which the oil is flowing on any given day. I would like to know how they are calculating it, then perhaps I would have a better idea if they are underestimating it, flat out lying or just doing the best they can to inform us.

  4. I agree with Alenda I do not think BP or anyone really knows for certain how much oil is pouring out of the damaged well. The things we know for sure is that the government and BP are surely not very effecient in their clean-up efforts. THere are way too many obstacles in the way of a fast and efficient clean-up operation

  5. BP's estimates have been a colossal joke. Yes, they have been lowballing the oil leak. It's clearly in their interests to underreport. They are going to be fined on a per barrel basis -- here's a snippet from a New York Times article on June 10th:

"The higher estimates will affect not only assessments of how much environmental damage the spill has done but also how much BP might eventually pay to clean up the mess — and it will most likely increase suspicion among skeptics about how honest and forthcoming the oil company has been throughout the catastrophe." Doug Mills, New York Times, June 10/10

The truth is leaking -- in fact pouring out. They cannot hide from it any longer. Let's just hope they don't go bankrupt to evade responsibility.

  6. BP has never publicly provided estimates of the flow rate.

Every one of the ever increasing estimates have come from government sources. The first flow rate was estimated on April 24 by the Coast Guard.

Subsequent increases in the flow rate estimate have come from the Flow Rate Technical Group, a team of scientists headed by the US Geological Survey.

  7. I don't think All the Kings Men know, anymore than we know the Velocity of Money flying through the Federal Government with any certainty.
